My name is Becky Millar. I work within the Philosophy of Mind and Philosophy of Cognitive Science on perception and emotion, particularly from a 4E (embodied, embedded, enactive and extended) perspective. ​

Much of my research has focused on difficult-to-articulate experiences, such as the emotional experience of grief and the perceptual phenomenology of smell and flavour. I am also interested in broader questions about how perceptual and emotional phenomenology relate to one another, and to interpersonal experience, and how such experiences can break down or be disrupted. I have also written on film and emotion regulation.

I am currently a Postdoctoral Research Associate for the project Grief: A Study of Human Emotional Experience at the University of York. Before this, I completed a PhD at the University of Edinburgh focused upon perceptual organisation and the applicability of sensorimotor enactivism--a theory that takes perceptual consciousness to consist in a kind of skill-mediated interaction with worldly objects--to flavour and smell. I also previously studied Philosophy at the University of Cambridge. ​​​
